The AD18 DS Converter: Equipped with a Double Speed Feature
RME in the past few years has been known for their converter products. There products have been featured in technology websites such as Sound on Sound. The newest converter produced by RME is the AD18 DS. The AD18 DS is an improved version of the AD18 Pro. It is a bi-directional 8-channel converter all in one unit. It supports a 24-bit, at 96kHz – which is why it has a DS on its name which means Double Speed.
The AD18 DS works more or less like the AD18 Pro however it has a better feature which is the DS or Double Speed. This feature of the AD18 DS transmits high-sample-rate information through ADAT light pipe interface with the use of the S/MUX format. AD18 DS has a facility for digital copy which allows information to be transmitted to digital outputs directly.
At the back of the AD18 DS you will already know how to operate it. The panel on top has a diagram which shows the different signal paths and the back panel shows the interfacing amount given. The AD18 DS has the same interconnectivity with the AD18 Pro.
On left most of the AD18 DS shows the IEC inlet. Along the row of the connectors at the bottom of the AD18 DC is the I/O for analogue while on top is the digital I/O. Its D-A converters goes with an 8 TRS sockets and a ‘D’-sub that has a 25-pin which can possibly be usedalternately. The front panel switch of the AD18 DS determines the maximum level of output.
A pair of 25-pin ‘D’-sub sockets comprises the digital I/O of the AD18 DS which gives an auxiliary and main TDIF I/O, it also has TOSlink ADAT optical ports which is a total of four. Two for each of them provide both inputs and outputs on the main and on the aux.
What employs the RME’s to get the word clock that is embedded are the inputs of the ADAT optical. The TDIF is in charge for incorporating the support for immediate decoding of the pre-emphasized tapes. The AD18 DS word-clock activates termination and is found close to the socket for the input. The output from the word clock can be an instrument for the distribution of clock signal towards other converter units.
The AD18 DS panel on the front part is similar to other RME products. It has uses lettering in white to determine the different control functions and divisions.
The main switch for power of the AD18 DS is on the right side of the unit. Its controls for operation are arranged starting from the left to the right. The AD18 DS A-d facilities are found at the left side, the clocking as well as the I/O for the digital selection is on the center, while the D-A facilities are on the right side.
